TOWN AND NATURE
THROUGH INTERNATIONAL EYES
Exhibition by Shropshire Supports Refugees
This exhibition highlights moments of beauty in nature and the urban environment. The artists and photographers have all found a new home in Shropshire, and bring their new perspectives to our view of the county.
Town and Nature Through International Eyes aims to capture the diverse experiences of refugees as they navigate the intersection between urban environments and nature in their host country. The exhibition aims to present a nuanced and multifaceted perspective, showcasing the resilience, adaptability, and unique stories of individuals who have been forced to leave their homes.
The works highlight the juxtaposition of refugee life in both urban and natural settings, illustrating the challenges and opportunities that arise in these environments. Through the lens of international photographers, the exhibition seeks to transcend borders and cultural boundaries, fostering a deeper understanding of the global refugee experience.
Shropshire Supports Refugees provides practical, social and emotional support for refugees, asylum-seekers and other displaced people in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.
This exhibition features work by Yulia Lavrenchuk, Veronika Tkachenko, Anastasia Puhachenko, Sameer Somo, Daiana Manonova, Nataliia Denysova, Maryna Kryvets, Tetiana Nihai, Nika Ostratyuk, Lora Arkhypenko and Robel Mekural

SEE ME
Ming de Nasty
The exhibition features fourteen new portraits by photographer Ming de Nasty. Made over a period of eight months, during 2023, with older LGBT+ residents of Shropshire, the portraits are collaborative, made with individuals who chose their locations, expressions and clothing to represent their lives and identity. The portraits speak of the gender politics of today and how people have found their identity, peace, love and friendships.
The portraits are part of a wider project which has included photography workshops, where participants have shared pictures of their younger lives. These have been scanned and documented and audio stories have been collected. This new LGBT+ collection will become a new archive at the Shropshire Archives Service.
Exhibitions curated from the project can also be seen at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery and at Shrewsbury Library. In March 2024 a curated selection will be at The Hive, Shrewsbury, as part of the LGBT History Festival.
