Defining Salop: County Maps from Shropshire Archives

For almost 500 years, county maps have formed the basis of the mapping of Britain. Embracing both art and science, regional maps served not only as practical tools but also as works of art, symbols of power and status and expressions of local pride. The development of the estate map and the county map is interwoven. Technology and practices were shared and map makers often turned their skilled hands to the production of both.
Early maps used varying scales and exaggerated perspective, often looking to us more like a bird's eye view drawing than a map. With advances in technology and a growing demand for more accurate information, decoration gradually began to give way to scientific accuracy.
Estate and county maps provided details of the extent of an estate or the county as a whole. They showed how the land was used, how much it was worth and they featured details of the landscape - cultivated land, woodlands, pasture, rivers, bridges, towns, mills and roads. They now give us a snapshot of Shropshire at a particular moment in its history. Moreover, the endeavours of these map makers between the late 16th and the early 19th centuries formed the foundation on which the Ordnance Survey built the world's first centralised national mapping system.
This exhibition at Theatre Severn was inspired by the kind gift of Mr Robert J Evans whose collection of county maps, now held by Shropshire Archives, includes some of the finest county maps of Shropshire produced.
At the Old Market Hall, images of some of the earliest maps of estates in Shropshire will be displayed. Together, these exhibitions show how map makers have been defining Salop for centuries.
