SHROPSHIRE FESTIVAL OF DANCE - APPALACHIAN
Venue: The Walker Theatre
Appalachian dancing has evolved from a mixture of dance styles taken to the Appalachian Mountains of North America by the Irish and Scottish settlers of the 19th century.
It is danced to the Old-Time tunes that came with them from the Celtic homelands and has been greatly influenced by the African and Native American rhythms they found in the New World. This exciting mixture of traditions provides the basis for the exhilarating percussive nature of Appalachian Dance today.
Footwear:
it is sometimes called American clogging, but is not usually danced in clogs.
Instead we use tap shoes, ‘slippy’ soled or flat leather-soled shoes.
Trainers are not suitable for this workshop.
The Festival consists of 8 dance workshops which are fun taster sessions for complete beginners, aged 16 years upwards. Some workshops are partner dances, you may be partnered up with someone else and you may be required to change partners, but it is not necessary to bring a partner with you.
